Stan Brakhage (nacido en Kansas City el 14 de enero de 1933 y fallecido en Victoria, Canadá, el 9 de marzo de 2003) fue un importante director de cine, director de fotografía, editor, actor y productor. Es conocido por ser uno de los cineastas más creativos y prolíficos en el cine experimental durante el siglo XX. Realizó más de 300 películas entre 1952 y 2003.
Biografía de Stan Brakhage
Primeros años y educación
Robert Sanders nació en un orfanato en Kansas City, Misuri. Solo tres semanas después, fue adoptado por Ludwig y Clara Brakhage, quienes le dieron el nombre de James Stanley Brakhage. Desde los cuatro años, Stan mostró talento para la música, comenzando una carrera como pianista y cantante en la radio hasta 1946.
Después de terminar la escuela secundaria en Denver, Colorado, Stan comenzó sus estudios universitarios en el Dartmouth College en 1951. Sin embargo, dejó la universidad en 1952 para dedicarse al cine. Su primera película, un cortometraje llamado Interim (1952), la hizo en su casa en Denver. Esta película mostró la influencia de directores como Sergei Eisenstein y Jean Cocteau, y tenía un estilo similar al neorrealismo.
En 1953, Brakhage se inscribió en el San Francisco Art Institute en San Francisco. Allí conoció a poetas vanguardistas como Robert Duncan y Kenneth Rexroth, quienes lo inspiraron mucho. Debido a problemas económicos, Brakhage regresó a Colorado. Allí dirigió un pequeño grupo de teatro en Central City, donde montaron obras de autores famosos como Frank Wedekind, Strindberg y Chéjov.

A finales de 1954, se mudó a Nueva York. Allí conoció a muchos artistas experimentales, incluyendo a los compositores John Cage y Edgard Varese, y a cineastas de vanguardia como Maya Deren, Marie Menken y Joseph Cornell.
Stan Brakhage como cineasta
En 1955, Brakhage trabajó en varios proyectos. Entre ellos, Centuries of June (en colaboración con Joseph Cornell), The Wonder Ring (su primera película a color) y Reflection on Black, que fue premiada. Al principio, sus películas tenían una historia, pero poco a poco se volvieron más abstractas y experimentales. Se inspiró en películas como la francesa Traité de bave et de éternité de Isidore Isou (1951). Al año siguiente, dio conferencias sobre cine en Los Ángeles y realizó las películas Flesh of Morning y Nightcats. A partir de 1956, también trabajó en películas corporativas y anuncios para televisión.
En 1957, Brakhage dejó el ambiente artístico de Nueva York y se mudó a Denver. Allí se casó con Jane Collum, quien se convirtió en una gran inspiración para sus películas en los años siguientes. Su vida familiar fue un tema muy importante para él en esa época. Ese mismo año, trabajó en los cortometrajes Daybreak y Whiteye, así como en Loving.
La película Anticipation of the Night (1958) fue un momento clave para Brakhage y para el cine experimental. En esta obra, la cámara parece mostrar lo que el personaje siente o piensa, haciendo la visión más personal.
En 1959, Brakhage filmó el nacimiento de su primer hijo en Window Water Baby Moving, una de sus películas más famosas. También filmó Sirius Remembered ese año, que muestra la descomposición del perro de su familia. Empezó a mostrar sus películas en público y a dar charlas sobre su trabajo y el de otros directores. El nacimiento de su segundo hijo en 1961 lo inspiró para hacer la película Thigh Line Lyre Triangular.
A principios de los años 60, además de filmar The Dead en el cementerio Père Lachaise en París, Brakhage escribió sobre sus ideas sobre el cine y la percepción en su libro Metaphors on Vision, publicado en 1963. En cuanto a la técnica, innovó ese mismo año con Mothlight. Para esta película, pegó insectos y plantas directamente sobre la cinta de 16 mm. En 1964, realizó Dog Star Man, su obra más importante, de 53 minutos y dividida en cuatro partes. Esta película se convirtió en una versión más larga de 250 minutos en 1965, llamada The Art of Vision. Ese mismo año, le robaron su equipo de 16 mm, por lo que filmó con cámaras de 8 mm hasta 1969.
Las ideas sobre la guerra y la política fueron un nuevo tema que exploró en películas como 23rd Psalm Branch en 1966, y en algunas de las treinta películas de la serie Song (1964-1969).
El final de los años 60 marcó una nueva etapa en el trabajo de Brakhage. Películas como Scenes from under childhood (1967-1970), The WAIR falcon saga, The machine of Eden y The animales of Eden and after exploran temas como el regreso a la infancia y las primeras etapas de la vida. En 1971, con Eyes, Deus Ex (1971) y The Act of Seeing with One’s Own Eyes, filmó lugares como la policía, el hospital y la morgue.
