La Medalla John Newbery es un importante premio literario. Se entrega cada año en Estados Unidos al autor del mejor libro infantil. Este reconocimiento lo otorga la Association for Library Service to Children. Esta asociación es parte de la Asociación de Bibliotecas de Estados Unidos (ALA).
Este premio se ha entregado anualmente desde 1922. Fue el primer premio literario creado específicamente para libros infantiles. Por eso, se considera uno de los premios más importantes en la literatura para niños en Estados Unidos. Otro premio muy reconocido es la Medalla Caldecott. El nombre de la medalla viene de John Newbery. Él fue un editor de libros para niños en el siglo XVIII.

John Newbery fue una figura muy importante en la historia de los libros para niños. Vivió en el siglo XVIII. Fue uno de los primeros editores en crear libros especialmente para el público infantil. Su trabajo ayudó a que los niños tuvieran acceso a historias divertidas y educativas.
¿Cómo se ve la Medalla?
La Medalla Newbery fue diseñada por René Paul Chamberlain en 1921. En un lado de la medalla, se ve un libro abierto. En el otro lado, hay un escritor que entrega su libro a dos niños. Este diseño simboliza la importancia de compartir historias con las nuevas generaciones.
