Motifs: (top) carved motifs and scalloped edges on both long sides; (center): a circle and inside it 5 winti symbols, a heart and an hourglass, and initials J. T. with a nail; (corners) 4 openwork leaf motifs; (front) a star motif with nail; (back) the initials A. D., each decorated with nail; (sides) each have 2 holes. Each motif on the bench in the woodcarvings has its own meaning, and can be found in nature or the animal kingdom. A Maroon man must master each symbol, and this technique, who would provide his future wife with a beautiful trousseau and proved his maturity. Certain symbols tell a story, so the bench may only be used by its owner, otherwise the seater will be punished by the forest spirit. As a percussion instrument: Kwakwabangi served as a strong rhythmic instrument played with two wooden sticks, during a Winti-pré (dance ritual) to invoke the gods and spirits; like an organ or a choir, it is an instrument to generate a feeling that takes the person into higher spheres.Historical background: Kwakwabangi were seen as idols by the Evangelical Brethren Community around 1765, or in the early years of conversing slaves to Christianity. The Gospel tells that there is only one God, and while the Winti religion has several gods and spirits, a slave will accept to honor another god. However, the Evangelical Brothers needed to destroy those benches, reasoned if they didn't, the slaves would be cursed.
