Archivo: Tenham meteorite, metal flaking

Descripción: Tenham meteorite slice. This historic meteorite fell in the spring of 1879 in South Gregory, Queensland, Australia. It is classified as an L6 Chondrite. This specimen is a fusion crusted half slice that weighs 72.3 grams making it the largest slice currently residing in my collection. Michael Cottingham purchased a large individual from Blaine Reed years ago and this piece was sliced from that mass. While Tenham isn't the most interesting meteorite from an aesthetic standpoint it does possess some attractive metal flaking in the matrix. And Tenham is undeniably the quintessential Australian chondrite from the 19th century making it a worthy entry into any collection. The mineral Ringwoodite, a high-pressure form of olivine, was first discovered in Tenham meteorites in 1969. Veins of Ringwoodite in this chondrite were produced by shock metamorphism. Large quantities of this mineral are thought to exist in Earth's mantle and the substance was named after the Australian earth scientist Alfred Ringwood.
