Cole Collection (M.84.31.97) Japanese Art壇ノ浦の戦いにおいて、最早これまでと自害を決した平知盛は、安徳天皇の乗る御座船に飛び移り、見苦しい物はすべて海に捨てよと命じ、自ら船の中を掃除したのち自害した、という『平家物語』の一場面を描いたもの。 In May 1185, Taira no Tomomori killed himself in the Battle of Dan no ura, thereby marking an end to the Taira clan. Before suicide, Tomomori crossed over to the women's vessel, of which TAIRA no Tokuko(Emperor Antoku) and TAIRA no Tokiko were aboard, and said 'The enemy soldiers are coming soon. Get rid of anything unsightly and purify yourselves' and he cleaned the ship. They drowned themselves. From The Tale of the Heike
