Description: Historical drawing of the skeleton of the common water frog Pelophylax “esculentus” (LINNAEUS, 1758). Top left corner: skull in ventral view. Top center: pectoral girdle in ventral view. Top right: mandible. Also note that the bone labelled “Astragalus” (a) is not entirely homologous to the astragalus in amniotes and today is usually referred to as tibiale. the bone labelled “Calcaneum” (ca) is not entirely homologous to the calcaneum in amniotes and today is usually referred to as fibulare. the bone labelled “Præcoracoid” (pco) is actually the clavicle. the structure labelled “Rudiment of sixth toe” (VI) today is usually referred to as prehallux and that its nature as a rudiment is controversial.
