Archivo: Portuguese chapel 04
Descripción: Signboard by the National Museums of Kenya, at the Portuguese chapel in Malindi, Kenya The Portuguese chapel in Malindi was built by the Portuguese in the 15th century. In 1542, during his journey to India, St. Francis Xavier buried two of his sailors in the adjoining graveyard. After the Portuguese left Malindi in 1593, the chapel was deserted until the British arrived in 1893. The first British Malindi District Commissioner, Mr. J. Bell Smith, was buried here in 1894, whereafter the graveyard has been used occasionally until 1958.
