Text Appearing Before Image: ns into what is to-day Argentine territory from the populous Central re-gion of Chile, while the lower passes were crossed to the south by way of many river valleys and by suchlakes as Llanquihue and Todos los Santos, a shortstrip only intervening between the latter beautifulwater and the lovely Nahuel Huapi in East Patagonia.During colonial times, with the depopulation of thewilder country and the concentration of towns uponthe seaboard, this traffic diminished and commercialexchange was limited to ocean transport, with, how-ever, an increasing intercourse with Argentina whenthe then Chilean provinces of Mendoza, San Luis andSan Juan developed trade with the new colonies ofBuenos Aires. But below Chiloe the territory re-mained unknown, and it has only been within recentyears that the southern lakes have been visited andsurveyed.
