Descripción: Drawing of a gold-leaf electroscope from the 1800s, illustrating induced charge. A hand holds a charged rod near the electroscope terminal, inducing polarization in the terminal, making the gold leaves spread apart. The two grounded metal electrodes opposite the gold leaves in the jar are a protective device. If an excessive charge is placed on the electroscope and the delicate leaves spread too far, they will touch the guard electrodes and discharge before tearing. Alterations: removed caption.
