The building served as a meeting place for Spanish and Cuban immigrants living and working in the Ybor City and the Tampa area, particularly in the cigar industry. The centro was designed by architect Frances J. Kennard, who worked on several other notable Tampa buildings of historic significance. The centro served as both a social club and a mutual aid society; providing members with healthcare, educational programs, recreational opportunities, a dance hall, theater, canteen and soda fountain.
