Archivo: Bust of an unknown Greek - Museo archeologico nazionale di Napoli
Descripción: Bronze bust of an unknown man, perhaps a philosopher, discovered in the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum. Now in the Naples National Archaeological Museum. Inventory number: 5602. Concerning this sculpture, the Naples Museum says [1]: "The identification of the piece with Democritus, already advanced in the eighteenth century was revived with new vigor in recent times, such identification would agree well with the adherence of the villa owner and patron of the "gallery" of sculptures - Epicurean philosophy descended from the doctrine of Democritus. ... It should, however, be noted that over the years, scholars have seen in the bronze very different characters from Solon and Aristotle to Philopoemen. See also a similar bronze bust of Heraclitus at livius.org. "
