Descripción: View of the Brahmavart ghaT from boat on the ganga. Taken by me at 10 AMon Feb 22, 2006. Cropped from IMG_1167.jpg. The stairs leading down to the river have a small templein the middle. This temple has a shrine with a peg stickingout of it. This peg is the axis around which the universeis turning (brahma = universe, Avarta = rotation; brahmavart = the spot about which the universe rotates). Feb 22 was en:Shivaratri, a major Indian festival honouring en:shiva. A number of cots have been lowered into the riverbank for performing a small puja offering by devotees who will then cross the ganga and go on a two-day trek (about 80 km) carrying ganges water (which cannot be set down on the ground for this period), which will then be poured on a lingam representing shiva. A team of two people carry two pots of water; when they need to rest, one must stand holding them while the other rests.
