Descripción: Winchester, the butter cross Although there has been a cross on this site since the 15th century, and parts of this one date from the 15th century, contemporary with the adjacent buildings, today's butter cross was mainly restored in 1865 by George Gilbert Scott. This followed its near demise in 1777 when the Paving Commissioners sold it to a Mr Dummer who wished to have it removed. The citizens of Winchester rioted and had it retained. Today it is an Ancient Scheduled Monument.
