Descripción: Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) Selfportrait with portrait of Bernard, 'Les Misérables' (1888) Gauguin painted this self-portrait at the request of Vincent van Gogh. The title 'Les Misérables' refers to the best-selling novel by Victor Hugo, which Van Gogh had also read. Gauguin portrayed himself as Jean Valjean, the criminal hero of the novel with a larger than life character. Gauguin maakte dit schilderij op verzoek van Vincent van Gogh.
