Archivo: Ulfberht sword Kazan
Description: Ulfberht sword in the Historical Museum in Kazan, Tatarstan, Russia. This is one of three Ulfberht swords found in the territory of the Volga Bulgars. Its hilt has been classified as Petersen type T-2. "Its guard or cross-piece has decorations consisting of three horizontal lines of large ‘cells’, which are connected to each other by narrow diagonal channels cut out of the guard and filled with twisted silver wire. The ends of these bands of decoration are formed by such wire being rolled into loops, while in the centre the two rows of silver wire form crosses. Unfortunately the pommel is missing, but it was almost certainly decorated in the same manner." V. Shpakovsky and D. Nicolle, Armies of the Volga Bulgars & Khanate of Kazan, 9th–16th centuries, Osprey Men-at-Arms 491 (2013), 23f.
