Descripción: The Welcome to Greenville (Indiana) town sign. The sign has become a symbol of the community illustrating the town's historic United Methodist Church, their location along the historic Buffalo Trace route, and highlighting the successful agribusiness that is Capriole Cheese. The sign was the vision of town councilman Andy Lemon in 2017 who put the historic and agricultural elements together to conceive a Welcome sign for Greenville. After an exhaustive search for a graphic artist, Lemon partnered with Danthonia Designs out of Australia who used a team of artists to design the sign for Greenville. In 2018, Lemon purchased the digital rights to the artwork. The handcrafted sign was designed to promote and educate residents on the historical significance of Greenville and the town's contributions to world wide agribusiness. The design features artwork that illustrates the following elements; 1) The historic United Methodist Church in Greenville which was built in 1899 by Capt. John Nafius and paid for by John Baptiste Ford (who is famous for his multiple contributions to industrialism). The church was listed on the National Historic Register in 2004. The church is named after Mathew Simpson who was a Methodist Bishop and a US Senator from Indiana. 2) A bison, which traveled the historic Buffalo Trace, highlighting Greenville's geographic location near the Buffalo Trace Route and our location on Highway 150 which is designated as Indiana's Historic Pathway. 3) A French Alpine goat with a picture of goat cheese. The goat and goat cheese is a reference to Capriole Goat Cheese made just on the outskirts of Greenville. Capriole is the most awarded goat cheese maker in the United States and one of the most awarded in the world. The goat cheese pictured is Capriole's most awarded cheese, The O'Banon. The goat is a breed known as a French Alpine which is what Capriole primarily used for milk. Capriole highlights Greenville's contributions to agribusiness and their story inspires entrepreneurs and future farmers. 4) "Established in 1816". The year Andrew Mundell and Benjamin Haines platted Greenville. Several of the roads in town, commonly refered to as alleys due to how narrow they are, have retained their original platted size.
