Description: Castle of Burghausen (Upper Bavaria) viewed from the Austrian side of the Salzach river. At the death of the last count of Burghausen in 1168, the castle was transferred to the Wittelsbachs, a family which ruled the Duchy of Bavaria between 1180 and 1918. With the partition of Bavaria between the Palatinate and Lower Bavaria in 1255, Burghausen Castle became the second residence of the dukes of Lower Bavaria (after Landshut). The dukes of Bavaria-Landshut (1392-1503), extended the fortifications around the entire castle hill, and the castle became the strongest fortress of the region. By the peace of Teschen (1779), the Innviertel was ceded to Austria, and Burghausen became a border castle between Bavaria and the Empire of Austria.
