According to Robert Berger, this south facade, which replaced Louis Le Vau's previous facade of 1660–1663 (see plate 13), was probably initially designed by Le Vau (Charles Le Brun may have also played a role), but was completed by Claude Perrault with modifications to make it more consistent with the east facade (see plate 7).
