The following legend is given in the chronological order of the earliest surviving written attestations of each branch: Hellenic (Greek) [1] Indo-Iranian [2] Italic (includes Romance) [3] Celtic [4] Germanic [5] Armenian [6] Balto-Slavic (Baltic) [7] Balto-Slavic (Slavic) [8] Albanian [9] Non-Indo-European languages Dotted/striped areas indicate where multilingualism is common (more visible upon full enlargement of the map).
