The road soon debouchedupon a grassy plain, over which we had to travel. After a detention of a couple of hours the storm ceased, andthe remainder of the journey was delightful. Bishop even wantedto stop on the road to sketch the beautiful belfry of the ruinedconvent of Acatlan. When we got to the hacienda, Senor Tejira was out, and wasnot expected back for some hours. Madame, madames mother,the children and nurses, and several gentlemen connected withthe establishment, spoke only Spanish, and if they had but con-sented to pass us into our rooms, and allow us to rest and bethankful, how happy we should have been! But their politenesstook another direction; for three long hours they endeavoured toentertain us ; they played the piano, they played the guitar, theysang to us till Senor Tejira returned at eight or nine oclock.
