Description: Burmese girl painted with thanaka. Burmese women smear their faces, and their children's, with thanaka. This is the bark of a plant which is ground into a paste with water and applied onto the face. It is said to protect the skin against the sun - and it lightens the colour of the face. The picture was taken in February, 2005. The girl was selling jade necklaces for tourists at the Unfinished Stupa (Mingun Phaya) in Myanmar.
