Descripción: The Fisher Building, 3011 West Grand Boulevard, Detroit, Michigan, as seen from West Grand Boulevard in front of Cadillac Place in December 2020. One of the most iconic skyscrapers in Detroit, and one of the most important works of world-famous architect Albert Kahn, this Art Deco masterpiece serves as a nexus for the New Center area about three miles north of downtown that, at the time of the building's construction, was beginning its ascent to the status of satellite business district. The Fisher family - seven brothers and an uncle - rose to prominence as manufacturers and innovators in the field of auto bodies, but it was only after their sale of Fisher Body Corporation to General Motors that the Fishers invested in the construction of the building that bears their name. With a design inspired (like the David Stott Building downtown) by that of Eliel Saarinen's unrealized Chicago Tribune Tower, the Fisher Building was an early adopter of what would soon be a trademark of the Art Deco style, namely setbacks or recesses in the façade that grow deeper in the upper stories, making for a tapered or "stepped" effect that allows more sunlight to reach ground level - a common complaint about skyscraper design up to that time. Then as now, the Fisher Building houses a mix of offices, retail space, and the 2,089-seat Fisher Theatre, one of Detroit's oldest and most renowned performance venues. The Fisher Building was designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1975, inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, and designated a National Historic Landmark - the highest designation a man-made structure, significant place, or archaeological site can achieve in the United States - in 1989.
