Descripción: First Baptist Church, 6 Chapel Street at Hughes Street, Belfast, New York, October 2020. By some measures, First Baptist is the oldest church in Belfast, dating to 1844, but the present appearance of the building is almost entirely the product of an extensive 1892 remodeling in which the wooden exterior walls were replaced with brick, stained glass windows were installed, and a session room and pastor's study were added. The end result presents the viewer with a simplified version of the Romanesque Revival style, with round arches crowning all windows, band courses of decorative masonry on the façade, and a stout tower with a pyramidal roof and unusual Syrian-arched belfry. First Baptist Church was formally organized in 1812 by Rev. Ephraim Sanford, who had been conducting sporadic informal services around town for at least half a dozen years prior, and remains in existence today.
