Text Appearing After Image: ANNOBON 267 a deciduous Anacardacia clothed only with beardedlichen; the first leaf buds appear in October beforethe foliage. This mingling of evergreen and deciduoustrees lends a peculiar character to the forest, but theblossom of both these trees is scanty. There arefew bushes in the underwood ; some scattered fernsgrow between the boulders, mostly as epiphytes, butthere is scarcely any herbaceous undergrowth. Duringthe rainy season everything probably has a fresherappearance, but I doubt whether even then the collectorwould find much to reward his pains. Mine wascertainly but a sorry share. The fauna was even more scanty. The only mam-malia that we encountered were wild, black hogs, rats,and vampire bats, and the only birds were a pretty,brick-red fly-catcher, a grey-green hooded bird(Zosterops), and a small owl; there were, of course, nowater birds.
