Description: Computer and speech synthesiser housing, 1999. Speech synthesiser used by English theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking (b 1942). Although current computers are very capable of pronoucing words, they find word emphasis (through which meaning is often conveyed) difficult. However, Hawking's computer-generated voice has become recognised world-wide as uniquely his own.
