Description: Designed in 1916 by Ray F. Coyle, the arms are a shield formed by three vertical stripes, with an inverted triangle at the top of the shield. Inside the triangle is a lamp of knowledge, (…”a golden lamp of knowledge,....”) representing "the educational advantages of the City." Atop the shield is the silhouette of the State capitol, and superimposed on the capitol is the Latin cross with crosslets on the three upper arms, surrounded by a pair of wings, from the crest of Stephen F. Austin's family coat of arms. Note: This coat of arms is only a component of the seal of the City of Austin, Texas, having no official recognition by itself.
