Descripción: The Church of St. Lawrence in Asheville, NC (1909). It was designed by Rafael Guastavino, who is most famous for his Guastavino tile system wherein arches are created with interlocking terra-cotta tiles and layers of mortar. It probably co-designed by Richard Sharp Smith; he did not practice independently, but may have been called upon as a local supervising architect. Guastavino died before the church was completed, and his remains were placed in the church's vault in 1909. Pope John Paul II raised the church to Minor Basilica status in 1993, and it is now the only basilica in western North Carolina.
