Descripción: A complete cast copper alloy thimble, dating to the 14th/ 15th century AD (length/ height: 18.1mm; diameter at base: 19.2mm; thickness of wall at base: 1.7mm; weight: 6.76g). This thimble is slightly splayed in shape near the base and has a roughly pointed and conical tip. Small holes are punched in irregular lines up the outer surface of the walls, and continue to circle round three times above a ridge where the top of the thimble slowly moves inwards to form the tip. Additionally, there are two indented lines running around the base of the thimble. The artefact is slightly worn but in a good condition with a dark green patina. Similar examples are illustrated in E. F. Holmes' 'Sewing Thimbles', Finds Research Group 700-1700 Datasheet 9. It is suggested by Holmes that domed shaped thimbles are found in Britain in contexts from about 1350, which is later than on the Continent where thimbles are known to have been made during the 13th century. It is possible that leather guards were used in preference to metal ones. The casting of domed thimbles was abandoned in the 16th century AD.
